This research goes back to my initial question on how to express painterly look in my short animated film. In 2005, I fortunately joined Future Media Art Lab in Chung-Ang University and participated in the interdisciplinary research developing NPR (Non Photorealistic Rendering) technology focused on Impressionism paintings. I analyzed 19C Impressionism oil paintings and abstracted features applicable to the process of developing algorithm by engineers. The research project resulted an installation art, Painterly Rendering With Designed Imperfection, which was exhibited at SIGGRAPH Gurilla Studio 2006 and has been exhibited at many galleries and festivals including Incheon International Digital Art Festival 2009.
In 2009 at ITP, I developed my own algorithm with openFrameworks based on my analysis . It was to answer my initial question. I applied this NPR technology to my abstract animation, Dancing, Moment, and could express overall painterly look.
